Recently, this shampoo has become more readily available in North America and the prices have come down making it very affordable for all consumers. Nizoral is a medicated dandruff shampoo and because of this, should only be used if you suffer from a very severe case of dandruff that cannot be treated with a typical anti-dandruff shampoo or treatment. Nizoral comes in smaller bottles then you would normally see for shampoo but that is because only a small amount is needed for a good lather and is only to be used about every 3-4 days. If you are suffering from a very extreme case of dandruff and nothing else that you have tried will cure the problem then read on and see if Nizoral will benefit you!
How to Use Nizoral
Because of the fact that this shampoo is medicated, I would strongly recommend to not use too much of this shampoo or too often. To apply, lather a dime sized amount into the hair and scalp and leave in for 5 minutes then rinse out. If you are suffering from chronic flaking, you can use this shampoo 3 times per week to begin. After you notice that flaking has stopped, you can reduce use to only once per week. This shampoo is very effective and a little goes a long way when it comes to application and using the right amount.
First Impressions on Nizoral
The smell is not overpowering or unpleasant, and the medicinal properties in the shampoo leave your scalp with a tingling sensation as soon as it is lathered into the hair. I noticed that this shampoo lathers very well and only a very tiny amount of shampoo is needed for a good lather. After the first use, I immediately noticed that almost all flaking was completely gone and it did a pretty good job at keeping it that way.

Pros & Cons of Nizoral
The main benefit of this shampoo is how effective it is. Since it is medicated and formulated specifically to treat severe cases of dandruff I really can’t see anyone that this product wouldn’t work on. Do keep in mind though that if you have a mild or moderate case of dandruff then using a medicated shampoo such as this is probable overkill and totally unnecessary.
Ironically, the main disadvantage of this product is the same as its main advantage. This shampoo is medicated and that could be a negative purchasing factor if you are looking for something free of chemicals, and especially anything that requires a prescription in higher doses. If you are looking for something natural and chemical free then this shampoo is not for you.
This shampoo is definitely most suitable for people with a very severe and chronic case of flaking that cannot be managed with a non medicated treatment. It is only recommended to use such a strong medication if nothing else will work to solve your dandruff issue and please keep in mind that it is best to speak to a doctor and get their opinion before using something like this especially if you are unsure or new to treating dandruff.
Final Thoughts on Nizoral
Nizoral is a product that I have used a couple years back when my dandruff was more severe and was recommended to me by a pharmacist as I was searching for a treatment myself. As it is a medicated product, I would only recommend to use it if your case of dandruff is very severe and requires something stronger than what is found in other products. The active ingredient found in this shampoo is ketoconazole which is an anti-fungal medication used to treat fungal infections including dandruff. At 1% ketoconazole, this shampoo is available over the counter which makes it convenient for those looking for an easy solution to dandruff.
