Selsun Blue is absolutely one of the most popular dandruff shampoo brands in North America and if you are like me, you too are interested in whether it actually works. Selsun Blue has a couple different shampoo offerings but I decided to try the maximum strength medicated formula to try and achieve the best results. This particular formula uses 1% selenium sulfide as the active ingredient which is known to help relieve itching and flaking of the scalp. I can vouch that the selenium sulfide is definitely effective, but there are some issues that I have with the other ingredients in the shampoo.
How to Use Selsun Blue Dandruff Shampoo
This is a typical dandruff shampoo, but please do keep in mind that this is a medicated formula and contains the active drug selenium sulfide and there is always the possibility of an allergic reaction if your skin is sensitive to the ingredient. To apply, just simply massage a small amount of shampoo into the hair and scalp and lather thoroughly. It is also recommended to use this shampoo at least 3 times per week if you want to keep your dandruff problem at a minimum.
First Impressions on Selsun Blue Dandruff Shampoo
The very first things that I noticed with this shampoo are the extreme menthol odor and blue color. I am definitely not a fan of added artificial chemicals to shampoo and feel that the odor and color of this shampoo were just too off putting. I also noticed that a little of this shampoo will go a long way because it lathers very well even with a very small amount. After washing out, I did notice that my dandruff had been dramatically reduced and my hair was feeling slightly softer. The problem that I faced however, was that after about a week of use I noticed that my dandruff was slowly starting to come back and I think that my hair and scalp had adjusted to the shampoo. Because of this, I feel that this shampoo would only be beneficial to someone who has a mild dandruff issue and there hair is not negatively effected by regular shampoo ingredients.

Pros & Cons of Selsun Blue Dandruff Shampoo
This shampoo is a great option for anyone with a mild flaking condition and looking for an inexpensive solution. I have a slightly more severe case of dandruff so the formula had adjusted to my hair and scalp but this may not be the case with everyone. I do however, believe that there are much better solutions available in the same price range so I would only recommend this shampoo if you really enjoy mint smell because there is no lack of that.
I don’t like that Selsun Blue is basically a normal shampoo with many artificial ingredients and only one true dandruff fighting ingredient. I think that the formula could actually make dandruff worse especially for someone with a severe case of dandruff or with skin and scalp allergies or irritations.
This shampoo is most suitable for anyone with a mild or seasonal case of dandruff. If you feel like your hair is normally flake free but some changes weather cause a small amount of scalp flaking then this would probably be a good an inexpensive solution for you. If you are like me, and have a more serious case then I would recommend something with higher quality and even natural ingredients so that the scalp
Final Thoughts on Selsun Blue Dandruff Shampoo
I think that Selsun Blue can be effective for the right person, but i personally believe that the target audience for this shampoo is just too small. There are simply too many additives and artificial ingredients for my liking and I would much prefer a natural dandruff shampoo formula. There are absolutely people out there that don’t care if a shampoo is all natural and have a forgiving hair type. I would reccoment Selsun Blue to you if this is the case.
